Defence or Welfare?

Defence or Welfare

What is your priority between Welfare or Defence?

Andy Burnham won’t say if he will give defence the funds they desperately need. Because he is a people pleaser who doesn’t want to upset his backbenchers, at Prime Minister’s Questions last week, Andy Burnham six times refused to answer the question about whether he would meet his own Chancellor’s demands to reach the 3 per cent of GDP on defence target by cutting welfare. Instead, he said that defence spending ‘can’t come at the expense of social security’.

  • Our Plan: Supporting Aspiration with a New Deal for Young People
  • Our Plan: We would raise defence spending to 3 per cent of GDP by the end of this Parliament. Kemi Badenoch has laid out a fully funded plan to reach 3 per cent of defence spending by 2029-30.
  • We will bring back the two-child benefit cap and spend the savings on Defence. Reintroducing this cap will save £3.2 billion per year. Using our Golden Economic Rule, we will use £1.6 billion to reduce the deficit and the remaining £1.6 billion will go to defence. We are committing to growing the Regular Army to 80,000 and the Army Reserves to 40,000 – a total increase of 20,000 soldiers.
  • We have announced a Sovereign Defence Fund to accelerate Britain’s war readiness. Our fully funded plan would mobilise billions in public and private funding to overhaul the defence industrial base. £17 billion of public spending would be reallocated to defence, for example from re-prioritising public funding currently spent on net-zero projects, helping give our armed forces the kit they need to keep Britain safe.
