Today a Conservative Party Freedom of Information request has revealed that Labour’s dodgy Chagos deal is set to cost 10 times more than the government claimed – Labour knew this but instead of cancelling this terrible deal they tried to cover up the facts.
Keir Starmer and Labour defended their dodgy Chagos deal – orchestrated by Keir Starmer’s lawyer chums – by saying that it would only cost £3.4 billion.
But newly released government documents, released only as the result of Conservative Party efforts, show that Labour knew this was a lie and that the cost is set to be £35 billion – that is £35 billion that the British taxpayer is on the hook for.
As Shadow Foreign Secretary Priti Patel lays out today we have all known this is a terrible deal with huge costs to hard-pressed British taxpayers, but the fact that for months ministers have sought to cover up the true amount is truly shocking.
