The Conservative Group on Lancashire County Council has requested support from the Council Leader to implement a county-wide scheme to display the Union Flag and the flag of St George on a street in every village, town, and city in Lancashire.
They emphasise the flags' role in fostering patriotism and community pride and propose an initial funding allocation of £10,000 per district to purchase flags, aiming for a safe, consistent, and long-term presence of these national symbols across Lancashire.
CC De Freitas (West Lancashire North) wrote in his letter to the Council Leader:
I hope that this letter finds you well. I'm writing on behalf of the Conservative Group on Lancashire County Council (LCC) to request your support in ensuring that the Union Flag and the flag of St George are proudly flown on a street in every village, town, and city in Lancashire.
Our national flags are powerful sources of patriotism and civic pride. Over the past week, we've seen people across the country take the time - at their own expense - to put up flags in their communities, celebrating our shared national identity.
This action has been fantastic to see, and we in the Conservative Group believe that a new LCC scheme should now lead this roll-out. LCC should ensure that our national flags can fly in a proud, safe, and consistent way which lasts for the long term - becoming a part of our community street scenes for years to come.
LCC already maintains a policy governing attachments to council-owned street lighting columns, ensuring that any additions do not pose risks to pedestrians, motorists, or the structural integrity of the columns. Given this, we believe LCC is best positioned to coordinate and implement a county-wide scheme.
To support this effort, we in the Conservative Group request that an initial allocation of £10,000 be made available in each of Lancashire's twelve districts. These funds would contribute to the costs of purchasing a stock of Union Flags and flags of St George within each locality.
Let's take this opportunity to position Lancashire as a national leader in celebrating our country's heritage and identity. I look forward to your response.
